In this series of posts, we are trying to review scientific research related to our company’s activities.
The title of the article we will review today is: Improving wear and corrosion resistance of HVAF sprayed 316L stainless steel coating by adding TiB2 ceramic particles and CeO2.
Authors & Journal: This research was conducted by Zhongxin Wang, Haiyong Liu, Jibo Huang, Shiye Zhuo, Yaosha Wu, Gang Wang, Zhigang Zheng, Zhaoguo Qiu, and Dechang Zeng. It was published in the Journal of Materials Research and Technology, Volume 31, 2024.
The study investigates ways to enhance the wear and corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel coatings by incorporating TiB2 ceramic particles and CeO2 using high-velocity air fuel (HVAF) spraying. The authors first prepared composite powders with TiB2 and CeO2 through high-energy ball milling and spray drying techniques, ensuring uniform distribution of the additives in the powder. These powders were then used to create coatings via HVAF spraying, and their microstructure, mechanical properties, wear resistance, and corrosion behavior were analyzed.
The results indicate that adding TiB2 significantly improves the hardness and wear resistance of the coating by forming a well-distributed ceramic phase within the stainless steel matrix. However, the addition of TiB2 alone led to a slight reduction in corrosion resistance. To address this issue, CeO2 was introduced, which helped maintain high wear resistance while enhancing corrosion resistance by reducing defects and oxidation effects in the coating. The study concludes that combining TiB2 and CeO2 creates an optimized coating with superior durability, making it a promising material for applications requiring strong wear and corrosion resistance.
Key Features of the Research:
- Material Enhancement: Incorporation of TiB2 and CeO2 improves the hardness and durability of 316L stainless steel coatings.
- Wear Resistance: TiB2 significantly increases the coating’s hardness and reduces wear rates.
- Corrosion Performance: The addition of CeO2 helps counteract the negative effects of TiB2 on corrosion resistance.
- Processing Techniques: The study highlights the effectiveness of HVAF spraying combined with powder preparation techniques like ball milling and spray drying.
